Natural Lime Stone
Limestone is an organic, sedimentary rock. This means it was formed from the remains of tiny shells and micro-skeletons deposited on the sea bed. They were compressed to form solid rock. Limestone is made up of calcium carbonate and reacts with diluted hydrocloric acid. Limestone is formed in layers - called bedding planes. These bedding planes contain vertical cracks called joints. Joints and bedding planes make the rock permeable
Erosion of Limestone
Weathering is the breakdown of rock by physical, chemical or biological processes. Limestone areas are weathered when rainwater, which contains a weak carbonic acid, reacts with limestone. When it rains limestone is dissolved. Rainwater erodes the joints and bedding planes. In doing this Karst scenery is created.
Our fire surround we are offering will be crafted from blocks of Quality English Limestone used throughout the centuries on many projects. The stone itself is quarried from the Jurassic Limestone range stretching from Dorset to Yorkshire.
Each block of stone will have exclusive variations in shade and quartz lines (known as veins), which are simply stunning and its ensures your fireplace will be one of a kind and unique to you.
At Westend Stone Supplies we don't in anyway attempt to manipulate any variations, being the shade or vein lines within the stone. This therefore ensures you only receive natural stone which is unique and one of a kind.
Please note we supply English Limestone, not polished stone, not reconstituted stone or European Limestone.
